ABOUT
SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY, INC.
Our Sorority History
It all started on November 12, 1922. Seven educators (Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie May Downey Rhodes Martin and Cubena McClure) banded together in the midst of the intense alienation they faced to create Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. Today, Sigma includes over 85,000 members in more than 500 chapters in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and as far away as Korea.
The mission of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is to elevate the lives of women and their families through community service, social action and civil participation. Sigma's goal is to attain greater progress in the areas of education, health and leadership development. Our sorors, affiliates, staff and community partners work to create and support initiatives that align with our objective.
